Homeless Program Honored as One of the Best in America

A program that began just eight years ago inside a donated bus is now being recognized nationally as one of the best run, hardest working charities in America. Mission Solano, a Fairfield-based nomadic homeless sheltering program, has been chosen as a 2006 Samaritan Award honoree by the Acton Institute, a think-tank organization based in Michigan.

"We offer a program that has proven to be effective at changing the lives of homeless men, women and children, and we're very happy to have that work recognized by a group like the Acton Institute," says Mission Solano's Executive Director Ron Marlette. "Our success lies in our partnership with community churches, city government and private businesses and the great generosity of our many donors," he adds.

Mission Solano is one of only two West Coast charities chosen as finalists in the national competition. Topshop supports London Fashion Week Inside & Out

Topshop has announced that for the first time customers will be able to watch front row action from the shows they support live from London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 11. Do Men and Women Use their Credit Cards Differently? Survey Says Yes

Men are more likely to use their credit cards to fill up the tank and eat out, while women are more likely to buy clothes and make retail purchases, according to a just-published online consumer survey conducted by CreditDonkey.com, a credit card comparison website.

Over a third of men say that gasoline is their most frequent purchase, compared to 26.6% of women who say the same.

One in four women say that online shopping is their most frequent purchase category, Tips: Find Street Fashion Online(may be you can find what you want on the oasap.com) while 18.8% of women say that retail purchases are. In comparison, 22% of men listed online shopping as their answer, and only 11% of men said retail purchases, such as clothing, or games, were their most frequent purchase.

"I always thought restaurants were my biggest expense category, but I was shocked when my personal 2011 year-end statement said I spend three times more on shopping than eating."

The current record is 409, held by the Jane Austen Festival in Bath, England.

With a base of one hundred volunteers dressed in period clothing, plus re-enactors and other participants, the organizers of the Spencerville Mill's Heritage Fair believe they will set a new record.

Beyond record-setting attempts, the Bicentennial Heritage Fair offers the history traveller an experience unlike any other.

Bringing history to life is all about acting and creating - a process very few people are able to enjoy in daily life. The Heritage Fair offers a unique opportunity to do both in a living theatre environment, where everyone can have a role - even spectators, if you insist.

The village has raised its own militia, which will continue to recruit throughout the Heritage Fair on June 1, 2 and 3.

Voting in early Upper Canada was a full-contact sport, played only by men. Experience the rowdiness of politics in 1812 with an election re-enactment, as Tory and Reform candidates battle over the impending war with the U.S., wolf bounties, the provision of schools and teachers, and building roads. 1. DANCE! Ever feel like going to the park with the kids and strutting your stuff on the dance floor all at the same time! Baby Loves Disco is your kind of place! With locations in dance clubs across the US, you can host a birthday party here or just go for an afternoon of dancing with the kids.

IMAX theaters are in many cities across the US now and have great educational films for kids, not to mention the theaters are enormous and have incredible sound systems.

8. THEATER. There are many theater companies in even the smallest towns with childrens theater. Check your local playhouse to see if anything is coming up in your neighborhood. If so, buy some tickets and make a date. If not, create your own play, complete with script, costumes and makeup! Action!

9. LIBRARY. As long as your child is capable of being quiet, this should be a mandatory experience for children as someday it might be a thing of the past. Most local libraries have weekly story time, which can be a lot of fun for young kids. Many libraries even have staff lead songs and art projects. Check your local library for details.

10. CITY HALL. Do your kids know what government is? Probably not. However, City Hall can be a great place to talk to kids about the local lawmakers, while showing them the courts and politicians of the city. If your child is over 7 years old, schedule a class field trip for these future voters and politicians of America!

11. GOLF. Whether you go to a miniature golf course or a putting green, golf is a good, all around fun activity for the whole family. Plan to make a few hours of the game and enjoy it. Just make sure that all kids understand proper form and that golf clubs are held *differently* than baseball bats.

12. SKATING. Ice skating and roller skating are great activities for both boys and girls. Skating encourages motor skills and physical activity as well as family bonding as together, kids can fall down and hold each other up!

13. BOWLING. Strike-outs build self confidence and who does not love to wear those stinky shoes? Bowling is a good, old, all-American past time that all children should experience at least once! Do not forget to bring socks (unless you want to borrow socks from the alley).

14. ART. Make art! Use paper and supplies that you find around the house, yard or school. Create projects that involve nature and color. You can make self-portraits, a family painting or a family mural. Just remember that there is no wrong way to make art, except if you do not make it.
